The Verizon MAE®
facilities are carrier-neutral PoPs where customers can connect
to use MAE services such as peering, layer 2 VPN, and transit.
A facility may extend to more than one metropolitan area and
encompass multiple physical sites. The MAE facilities use
several types of switches. A customer connects to a MAE
facility at one or more access ports on these
switches. Devices that are connected to MAE access ports are
owned and managed by customers. They perform routing
functions as required by the customers' application, e.g.
peering. More information about connecting to a MAE can be
found in the Customer Router Configuration
Guide and in the Peering section of this site.
Though each MAE facility is a separate network, the U.S.
exchanges are
now interconnected and extend the reach of peering connections
nationwide. MAE Extended Peering is available on a per-port
basis. Furthermore, the exchanges have recently expanded to
cover additional metropolitan areas providing extended
coverage to customers
with regional peering service.
